Our race schedule has been prepared to not to overlap with any events being planned by our two ‘sister clubs’, the Riyadh Triathletes and the Riyadh Road Runners.

Racing: Overview

At the heart of our activities is the RW Championship. We have 12 races over a season and we recognise the highest performing riders in each of our 6 race categories. The best 7 race placings are taken into account when making the final Championship Points Score, NOT the total amount of accrued points.

Every race, Championship Points are allocated to riders who finish the course according to their position.

1st place         200 points

2nd place        199 points

…                     …

30th place      171 points etc…

Some of our races are Time Trials, where riders with a dedicated TT bike have a clear speed advantage. Even a racer who does not have a TT bike can still have a very good chance of placing well in the overall championship, by collecting points at the road races. (We might make a side argument that TT races are an extremely good way of improving and assessing your fitness, no matter what kind of bike you ride).

Each of the race categories is like a mini-competition within the overall season. Juniors will see a ranking of their position in the club overall, but perhaps more importantly, against other Junior riders. This is true for each of the 6 race categories we have.

A-Race and B-Race Differences

Until 2022, Riyadh Wheelers only offered one race for people to participate in (but Women and Junior riders typically rode shorter distances (less laps).

Following feedback in the 2022 Riders’ Survey, we are now offering two races. Initially this will be for a pilot phase, up until the end of December 2022. If this experiment goes well, B-Races will be offered for the rest of the season.

The A-Race is for the higher level of competition.

The B-Race is for those who prefer a less intense and demanding level of competition (and there are many good reasons for this choice, such as being new to racing, not having been able to do as much training as desired, not having the optimal race equipment, returning from injury etc).

If you prefer, you can listen to an explanation in this video below, or carry on reading underneath it.

If Men, aged between 20–59 years wish to compete in the season Championship, they must start in the A-Race to accumulate points. These men can choose to join in the B-Race instead, but they will not earn any Championship Points.

Women, Junior and Senior riders should compete in the B-Race if they want to earn Championship Points. Women and Senior riders are free to join the A-Race if they like, but they will not earn Championship Points there.

Only road race bikes are permitted in the A-Race (but it is OK if they are fitted with clip-on aero bars). Full Time Trial bikes can only be used in Time Trial races as they are too dangerous to be used in a peloton.

Apart from road racing bikes, Mountain Bikes (MTB/VTT) and Hybrid bikes can be used in the B-Race. eBikes of any variety are excluded from all RW races.

The B-Race will set off 2 minutes after the A-Race and will be on the same circuit as the A-Race, but will be for fewer laps.

At race registration time, riders will choose to participate in the A-Race or the B-Race. If a rider changes their mind, they can switch races up to half an hour before race start, by adjusting their online registration information (race selection field), or speaking to the people at the registration desk.

Team Challenge Rules

The team category will be an OPTIONAL choice and it is an EXTRA category to the same RW categories of the last season which means if your race in a team your individual result will go to the team category and also to other individual categories (ex: Open-Veteran-Master-Male-Female etc…)

You can either: A. join any of teams that initiated by RW based on strength Class or B. bring your own team.

The Team must include at minimum of 4 riders and maximum of 8.

The team result will be calculated for all races road and TT races based on the best THREE riders times for each team, then will convert the team order to points.

Female riders who wish to join a team category will be assigned to a team and every race her points from female category will go to her team.
